Overview

A soft starter uses thyristors to raise motor voltage gradually and, in bypass types, closes internal contacts once the motor is up to speed to reduce heat losses. Selection depends on motor full-load current and voltage, the starting duty (light, normal or heavy), starts per hour and the protection and communication functions required. Unlike a variable frequency drive it does not control running speed.
