Cryogenic liquid tanks · Oxygen/Nitrogen/Argon/CO2/LNG

Cryogenic liquid tanks (Oxygen/Nitrogen/Argon/CO2/LNG), 1,000 to 100,000 kg

Vacuum-insulated cryogenic tanks for storing liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and LNG on site, from 1,000 kg micro-bulk tanks for breweries and workshops to bulk tanks holding 100,000 kg, together with liquid cylinders, air separation units and PSA oxygen and nitrogen generators. Share the gas and capacity you require and we will quote the equipment, freight and documentation for your site anywhere in Southern Africa.

Air separation units and PSA systems

Where buying liquid gas is not practical, oxygen and nitrogen can be produced on site. PSA (pressure swing adsorption) generators separate oxygen or nitrogen gas from compressed air for continuous supply at the point of use. Cryogenic air separation units (ASUs) produce oxygen, nitrogen and argon at larger scale, as gas for the process or as liquid for storage in a cryogenic tank.

Choosing a cryogenic liquid tank

Once a site uses more than a few gas cylinders a day, a cryogenic liquid tank is typically more economical and safer to operate: a single vessel is refilled by tanker, eliminating the handling and changeover of large numbers of cylinders.

Size the tank by the mass of liquid gas you need between deliveries, not only by its volume, and state the medium. Oxygen, nitrogen, argon, CO2 and LNG have different densities and boiling points, so the same tank holds a different mass of each.

The working pressure class sets how much liquid a tank can hold and the pressure available at your outlet. A pressure-building circuit keeps the tank at pressure, and an ambient vaporiser turns liquid into gas at the flow rate your process needs. Oxygen service also requires cleaning to oxygen standards.

Pressure equipment used in South Africa falls under the Pressure Equipment Regulations. The design code and conformity route are confirmed with the manufacturer before you order. Read more in our guide to buying pressure equipment for use in South Africa.

Cryogenic tank questions

What is a cryogenic liquid tank?

A vacuum-insulated vessel that stores an industrial gas as a very cold liquid, such as liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide or LNG. Storing gas as a liquid takes far less space than compressed cylinders, and a vaporiser turns the liquid back into gas at the flow rate your process needs.

Which gases can your tanks store?

Our cryogenic tank range covers liquid oxygen (LOX), liquid nitrogen (LIN), liquid argon (LAr), liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) and LNG. Liquid cylinders (dewars) cover oxygen, nitrogen, argon and CO2. The medium is confirmed in your quotation, because it sets the materials, cleaning, fill limit and pressure class.

What sizes do you supply?

From about 1,000 kg to 100,000 kg of liquid gas: micro-bulk tanks from 1 m³, bulk tanks from 10 m³ to 200 m³ in vertical or horizontal form, and liquid cylinders from 175 L to 1,000 L. Tell us the gas and the mass you need to store and we will quote the appropriate tank.

How much gas does a 1 m³ micro-bulk tank hold?

Up to 1,083 kg of liquid oxygen, according to the manufacturer's parameter sheet. The usable mass differs for nitrogen, argon, CO2 and LNG and depends on the working pressure class, so it is confirmed in your quotation.

Can I produce oxygen or nitrogen on site instead of buying liquid?

Yes. PSA (pressure swing adsorption) generators produce oxygen or nitrogen gas on site from compressed air, and air separation units (ASUs) produce oxygen, nitrogen and argon at larger scale, as gas or liquid for storage in a cryogenic tank. The right choice depends on the purity, flow and pressure you need.

Who makes the tanks?

FGR Online is the registered distributor for Southern Africa for Hong Hui Machinery (Binzhou Honghui Machinery Co., Ltd.), which makes cryogenic storage tanks for liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and LNG.

Do you supply cryogenic tanks outside South Africa?

Yes. We supply businesses across Southern Africa and the wider African market. Door or port delivery is quoted per shipment, including the route, Incoterm and estimated transit time; depending on the destination, freight may be routed through Durban, Maputo, Beira, Walvis Bay or Dar es Salaam.

What do I need to send for a quote?

The gas (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, CO2 or LNG), the mass or volume to store, your daily consumption, the working pressure at the point of use, the site location and any design code or documentation your site requires.
